Hello,
My name is Carmen Calderon; my close friends call me Kermen and I’m 19 years old. I come from a school in the middle of nowhere called Pierce High. I graduated in 2019 and I’m currently attending Sacramento City College to become a dental hygienist. I love music and the way it liberates people from the world. Nature always finds a way to grab my attention. My favorite color is the color green because it makes me feel alive and clean and happy. Monkeys are my favorite animals because as silly as they can be, they can be very kind and intelligent. I love to eat cheesecake and my mom’s enchiladas. My favorite drink is lemonade. I truly appreciate my boyfriend, my friends, family, and my SESI Mentor (because he gave me a Pb&J sandwich 🙂 ). My main hobbies are singing, dancing, and hanging out with my people. I also really enjoy painting, watching the sky, and photography. I’m also really into poetry. 💚
What brought me to this class was a program called the SESI project. SESI stands for STEM Equity and Success Initiative. It’s a program where low income or latinx and first gen students who have a STEM career path are helped. We are provided with classes, books, and exclusive counseling. What made me take this class was a mentor and a counselor. I originally was taking the Monday/Wednesday session until I changed the class. My counselor suggested I take this class and a mentor suggested I should take it on Tuesday/Thursdays. Philosophy is a very interesting class. I feel that this might relate to my life more than other courses will. 💚
The reason I’m in SCC to begin with is because they have a dental program and it was the closest campus with a dental program to my house. I wasn’t sure if i wanted to come here but there were some events that changed my mind. A teacher and an adviser of mine recommended SCC as an option and encouraged me to keep going to school. They both believed that I can do more than what I claim to do. They both wanted what’s best for me and I feel like I owe them some success. I’m going to school for all the people who believe I can make myself a better life. If they believe in me, then why can’t I believe in myself. 💚
My culture capital includes kindness, honesty, assistance, and patience. I’m kind to all because there is honestly no reason not to be. Being kind is not as difficult as it seems. Being human is not as hard as it looks. The whole world should try it sometime. I’m honest because honesty is the best policy. Lying doesn’t do anyone any good. Honestly, if someone needs to hide something then they probably shouldn’t be doing what they are doing. I like to help others but only if someone truly wants to help themselves succeed. You can’t help or save someone who doesn’t want the aid. It’ll do nothing for them or yourself. Most importantly I’m patient, because I know some need to take their time. We are all different and need different things. It’s ok to be yourself. 💚
